Globalization Test!!!

“On my honor, I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this graded academic work. I am a person of integrity and I do not cheat.” Agree to this statement by typing your name here: Hannah Jacques

Globalization is the increasing interconnectedness of people and places through converging processes of economic, political, and culture change. Those who are pro-globalization believe that wealth will “trickle down” from rich countries to poor countries. They also believe it will spread the benefits of new ideas and new technologies to all nations. One organization that loans money to nations so they can invest in business is the IMF. On the other hand, those who are anti-globalization say it is not fair, because the richest 20% of the world’s people consume 86% of the world’s resources, resulting in between “haves” and “have nots.”

Use the CIA Factbook to answer the following questions: In Luxembourg the life expectancy is 79.33, the infant mortality rate is 4.56 deaths per 1000 live births, the literacy rate is 100%, and the TFR is 1.78. In Libya the life expectancy is 21.05, the infant mortality rate is 21.05 deaths per 1000 live births, the literacy rate is 82.6%, and the TFR is 3.08.

We often categorize nations as being “developed” or “developing” nations. Vietnam and Mexico would be considered developing nations; Japan and Canada are developed nations.

The current world population is over 6.6 billion people. The number that measures how many children the average woman in a nation will bear is known as the Rate of Natural increase, which is abbreviated as RNI. When this number is exactly 2.1, then the population stays the same; if it’s higher, the population goes up, and if it’s lower, the population decreases. The population is growing fastest in developing nations.

A population pyramid that is shaped just like a pyramid -- wide on the bottom and narrow at the top -- shows a country whose population is increasing. If it is shaped more like a vase or a soda bottle, that nation’s population is increasing. Younger people are found at the bottom of the pyramid, and males are found on the left hand side.

When discussing migration, people who are entering a country are known as immigration, and people who are leaving a country are known as emigration.

People leave their country for many reasons. An example of a push force is civil strife, and an example of a pull force is health services. If a nation’s net migration rate is a negative number, it means more people are leaving the country than are arriving.

Essay #1

3) The demographic transition graph describes the changes in birthrates and death rates that a country experiences over time. Describe the changes that the United States has gone through by using the demographic transition diagram.

The birth rate has gone down. The death rate has also gone down. Peoplehave stopped having babaies because they are now wanted to have jobs and have a career. Peoplehave made choices to travel and having a child would make it harder for them to travel.

Essay #2

People in Mexico have migrated to the United States in search for a better life and better living way. Some Mexicans who try to go over the border illegally usually get caught and taken back to their home or they are able to get through without getting caught. Some Mexicans say that they don't like living in the US because they say the economy is worse and they had thought that it would have gotten better in the next year.

Essay On Taking Tests On The Computer

Taking test on the computer, to me, is not a very good idea. I don't like it because some peoples computers might die in the middle of taking it or there internet might not be working. I like taking tests on paper better then taking them on the computer.

Total Fertility Rate (Yahoo)

The TFR of the United Statesis 2.1. That means every family that has 2.1 kids, then the population in the US will stay the same. If people keep having legal abortions the population will decrease to the TFR of Europe(about 1.3)

In the 21st century, the United States has experienced a great wave of immigration since the 1920s. Obama is now trying to make illegal aliens legal, but still trying to keep everything in order. Once, two Mexican men where arrested at the border of San Diego for trying to bring other people into the United States illegally by hiding them in the van. People usually immigrate because of wars, famine, and persecution. Most people emigrate from the Caribbean.

The Demographic Transition

About this graph:
The blue line in the top of the graph says "Birth Rate" which shows the rates of birth in the different countries. The black line shows the "Death Rate" which show how many people die in certain countries. In Stage 3 the Birth Rate starts to decrease because women start to realize that they arent just "baby makers", and that they can have a job and their own career. We have also found ways for men and women to use protection. In Stage 5, there is question marks because we aren't sure what is going to happen in the next few years with the population.

The population of the Japan in 2009.
The TFR is 1.3. It think the population

the population pyramid of Brazil in 2009.
The TFR of Brazil is 2.3. I think the population
will increase because the TFR is so high. The % of young people is 9% and the % bof older people is 1 %.

Pyramid Population

- A population pyramid can help human geographers determine what will happen to a country's population.
- Age- the population pyramids visually present the population of a particular country broken down by age.
- Gender: population pyramids are split. One side presents the number of males in a particular population; the other reflects the number of females within the same population.
Elements of the Population Pyramid
- Young and Old Population: % of population under age 15: global average is 30 %, low is 17% (Europe); high of 42% (Africa); high number indicates great potential for future growth; Percentage of population over age 65: identifies need for health care and other social services.
- Life expectancy: average number of years a person is expected to live, affected by many factor.
Questions
- Which country has an overall higher life expectancy?- B
- Which country has a larger percentage of young population?-A
- If both countries currently have the same total population, which country's population will be larger twenty years from now? Why?- A, because there is already more babies/ young people on A, but B has less then A.
- INFORMATION- http://www.census.gov/ipc/www/idb/pyramids.html
Book Info
- A common starting point for measuring demographic change is the rate of natural increase(RNI),which depicts the annual growth rate for a country or region as a percentage.
- This statistic is produced by subtracting the number of deaths in a given year from the births.
- Totally Fertility Rate (TFR) 2.1 the population will stay the same

TFR- the average number of children that women will bear in a population.

Pros and Cons

- it promotes free market, export- oriented economies at the expense of localized, sustainable economies
- The world bank , the IMF, and the WTO interfere with a nations decision-making power
- Its not fair; the richest 20% of the worlds people consume 86% of the worlds recourses
- The whole economic system is very unstable; too easy for a crisis

Did You Know? 2.0

- In the next8 seconds, 34 babies will be born
- College graduates
U.S. India China
1.3 million 3.1 million 3.3 million

Critics of Globalization

A recent United Nations report notes that the social conditions of 60 countries are worse off now than 30 years ago. The richest, 20% percent of the worlds people, consume 86 % of the worlds recourses. While, the poorest, 80 % percent of the worlds people, only consume 14 %. The wealthiest countries have grown much richer over the past two decades. The poorest have become more impoverished. In countries such as the United States, the wealthiest, have reaped almost all of the gains that globalization has offered; the poorest, have seen either their income decline in recent decades as wages have remained static or actually have become unemployed as jobs are lost to outsourcing.

The Five Themes of
Human Geography
-environmental geography
-population and settlement
-cultural coherence and diversity
-geopolitical framework
-economic and social development

Chapter 1

Chapter 1
-There are many differences between Physical Geography and Human Geography.
-Five themes of human geography and identify the various political regions of the world

GLOBALIZATION- the increasing interconnectedness of people and places through converging processes of economic, political, and culture change.

Geography- describes the earth and explains various patterns on its surfaces.

Physical Geography- examines climates, landforms, soils, vegetation, hydrology(land)

Human Geography- explores social, economic, and political factors; demography, migration, culture(people)

Geography explores both topics (culture geography, politics, population) and regions (such as North America and Southeast Asia)
